"I entirely abandoned the study of letter. Resolving to seek no knowledge other than that which could be found in myself or else in the great book of the world, I spent the rest of my youth traveling, visiting courts and armies, mixing with people of diverse temperaments and ranks, gathering various experiences, testing myself in the situations which fortune offered me, and at all times reflecting upon whatever came my way so as to derive some profit from it." (Descartes, Discourse on the Method of Rightly Conducting One's Reason and Seeking the Truth in the Sciences)

THAILAND. Tomorrow morning... Koh Samui and Koh Phangan. Some time to catch up on reading, writing, enjoying life without obligations... Then thrust into reality: life in India working.

This past week I've been getting away from everything- since I moved into a hotel, I spent every day with Vivian, walking around Hong Kong, wandering into random boutique shops, admiring Asian fashion, indulging occasionally, and more or less absorbing life as a Hong Konger without responsibility. Which has led me to a conclusion: not only is this city filled with absurd amounts of conspicuous consumption, it is also obsessed with the women as kept objects. Which is kind of disappointing since I fell in love with the city's charm last year, and its hard to accept its pitfalls.

I would find on every venture into the city hordes of women with designer shopping bags dangling from each white skinny arm as they chatted furiously with their girlfriends, comparing their pricey cosmetic purchases and debating the worth of buying a jimmy choo sandal on sale. Even more, every store was set up to provide shoppers with the "whole shopping experience" trying to distinguish itself from the other Armani store a block away. This included approx 3 sales women practically falling over you, trying desperately to find you the perfect dress, the perfect eyeshadow, while serving you hot water. (I'm guessing they thought it was helpful to down warm liquids to coax the shopper into their fabulous items.) After awhile, as I might have not expected, doing nothing is extremely, utterly boring. It all becomes a blur, no one day standing out against the next.

Time for a change and getting out of here. Sorting out packing for this week amongst 3 overstuffed suitcases... An adventure to say the least.

Don't know where I'll be staying in Thailand yet, but I'm guessing connectivity to the outside world will be minimal- should be back on Sunday the 7th
